GOLDEN GIRLS DRAG SHOW, THE HOLIDAY EDITION

Drag queens dressed like the Golden Girls; what a way to celebrate the holiday season!

Last night a group of us went to dinner and attended a drag show that showcased two episodes of the legendary sitcom The Golden Girls. They used the same script from the show and accentuated a few of the funnier lies, which were just funnier with a drag queens performing them.

This was a really funny night. When they started an episode the whole crowd, which consisted of a diverse group of over 100 people, sang the intro song together in unison. During scene changes they played audio from some of the old commercials from the days the show aired on TV.

John's good friend is one of the performers, Heklina. She played Dorothy - Bea Arthur's character - and nailed every line like an old pro. She is a big deal in San Francisco's drag scene, hosting a ritual in the gay community called Tranny Shack (which recently ended its Tuesday night weekly shows at the Stud bar and now can only be seen at special events). I also enjoyed the performance of Blanche, she had the accent down pat and really used her eyes to make that sexual yet innocent look work, which is needed for this character.

The best part of the show are the performers facial expressions. When you know how to hit the punch line and allow everyone in the audience to laugh it out, it really helps to make the performance more cohesive. When I watched the show as a kid with my grandmother on Saturday nights, I was too young to understand some of the very hilarious one liners delivered by this elderly group of senior citizens. This show helped me enjoy the smart and funnier side of The Golden Girls that I was too young to understand when it originally aired. It also is something the you can experience Only in San Francisco!
