Day after day I see journalists and politicians - mostly Republican - criticizing Obama's stimulus package, and they offer no alternatives to the plan. Republican Governor Bobby Jindal of Louisiana recently appeared on “Meet the Press” and said he's rejecting $100 million in unemployment assistance in the stimulus plan because it would force the state to raise business taxes to pay for the extra aid once the federal dollars run out. He said, "It requires us to make a permanent change in our law,” he said. “It’s like spending a dollar to get a dime.”
This is only one example of an elected Republican official denouncing the stimulus plan and from what I have been reading and watching on T.V., none of them are offering a plan to fix the economy. Everyone agrees that we are approaching the worst economic times since the Great Depression and that we need to do something but as far as I can see, there is only one plan on the table and another group standing by articulating what they don't like about it. Going as far as not participating in the plan and not offering up an alternative sounds like political suicide but these people seem to be having their egos getting in the way of making progress in what they have been elected to do.
This is even more frustrating due the prior Republican administration being very culpable for why were are in this mess in the first place. I just wish people would put their politics aside and work together to fix this crisis. The reason why they were elected to their position was to represent their constituents who are suffering right now. People are losing their jobs at huge rates, banks are failing, our country's major industries are on the brink of bankruptcy and the country is in an almost insurmountable deficit. I'm not an economist and just have a basic understanding of what is going on with the current economic climate - like most Americans - and I wish we can put all politics aside and come together to devise a plan that will lead us down the path to a stable economy.
